When David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash created this pop super trio in 1968 after their splits from the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and The Hollies, respectively, it would have been a pipedream that a hits package released 37 years later would sound as eternal and essential as this one. The 19 songs straddle the four-album, landscape-altered timeframe between 1969's post-Woodstock debut Crosby, Stills & Nash and 1982's Daylight Again, which helped inaugurate the MTV era. Unbalanced sequencing--which randomly bounces 12 years ahead and five years back--is rescued by the superb harmonies, unique songwriting and divergent personalities of the three members. With politics and culture always at the forefront, Stills bookends the band's trademark canon with "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Southern Cross," Nash incorporates Eastern influences to "Marrakesh Express" and folk timber to "Just a Song Before I Go" and "Teach Your Children," and the ever-capricious Crosby leads the way lyrically with the lingering "Delta" to the Robert Kennedy tribute "Long Time Gone." Sure, the collection is missing any songs by ("Ohio") or contributions from ("Woodstock") the fourth name on the marquee (Neil Young). Here's hoping that's for another Greatest Hits. --Scott Holter

 America's - "30 Years History - Their Best Songs" MP3 | CBR | 320 Kbps Stereo | 870 MB Genre: Rock'n'Roll
AMERICA is one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell are "America". The boys were all sons of american servicemen. They all were accustomed to moving constantly. DEWEY once said that is was tough, the only good thing was that when you messed up, you could always count on starting over again, new. The 3 met in high school in London, they were in various dance type bands. One of them that GERRY was in was "Swallow the Buffalo". It was this band, namely GERRY'S work, who caught the attention of their first manager, Jeff Dexter. GERRY'S work impressed him & this led Dexter to AMERICA. The 1st LP was released via Warner, not too successful; 4 more cuts went in including "HORSE" & the rest is history. DEWEY has said that "HORSE" was written when he was 18. Much of it when he was sitting in a drizzly, gray day in London. It was kind of an abstract summation of what he missed in the States. GERRY wrote "I NEED YOU" when he was 16. Well, when the guys graduated high school in 1969, they briefly went their separate ways; GERRY worked in a warehouse, DAN went off to college & DEWEY tried acting school. GERRY did consider taking his musical talents to a higher academia but dropped that notion & also considered art or architecture as a profession. The guys soon reunited working in a snack bar in a small town outside of London. As military sons, they learned how to pack up & move quite frequently. This was probably very good training for the later rigors of touring & is it any wonder that to this day they still tour.
"A Horse with No Name," America's debut single, was released at the end of 1971. In January 1972, the song — which strongly recalled the acoustic numbers of Neil Young — became a number three hit in the U.K. The group's self-titled debut album followed the same stylistic pattern and became a hit as well, peaking at number 14. Following their British success, America returned to North America, beginning a supporting tour for the Everly Brothers. "A Horse with No Name" was released in the U.S. that spring, where it soon became a number one single, pushing Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" off the top of the charts; America followed the single to the top of the charts. "I Need You" became another Top Ten hit that summer, and the group began work on its second album. "Ventura Highway," the first single released from this collaboration, became their third straight Top Ten hit in December of 1972. In the beginning of 1973, America won the Grammy award for Best New Artist of 1972.
Homecoming was released in January of 1973, becoming a Top Ten hit in the U.S. and peaking at number 21 in the U.K. Under Martin's direction, America's essential sound didn't change, it just became more polished. However, the hits stopped coming fairly soon — they had only one minor Top 40 hit in 1973. Hat Trick, the group's third album, was released toward the end of 1973; it failed to make it past number 28 on the American charts. Released in the late fall of 1974, Holiday was the first record the group made with producer George Martin. Holiday returned America to the top of the charts, peaking at number three and launching the hit singles "Tin Man" and "Lonely People." "Sister Golden Hair," pulled from 1975's Hearts, became their second number one single. That same year, the group released History/America's Greatest Hits, which would eventually sell over four million copies.
Although America's 1976 effort Hideaway went gold and peaked at number 11, the group's audience was beginning to decline. After releasing Harbor to a lukewarm reception, Dan Peek left the group, deciding to become a Contemporary Christian recording artist. The group continued as a duo; their last Martin-produced record, Silent Letter, was released in 1979 to little attention. America returned to the Top Ten in 1982 with "You Can Do Magic," an adult-contemporary pop number that featured synthesizers along with their trademark harmonies. "The Border" became their last Top 40 hit in 1983, peaking at number 33. After releasing America in Concert in the summer of 1985, the group continued to tour successfully into the '90s, resurfacing in 1998 with Human Nature.
America: Dewey Bunnell (vocals, guitar, percussion); Dan Peek (vocals, guitar); Gerry Beckley (vocals, bass). Additional personnel: Henry Diltz (banjo); Joe Osbourne (bass); Hal Blaine, Gary Mallaber (drums, percussion).

America outsources everything else — why not country music? Like Neil Young, Robbie Robertson and Shania Twain, Kathleen Edwards is a Canadian who crafts music that's often more "American"-tasting than domestic brands. But she's not fronting. On her strongest album yet, she sets a poignant road tale between New York and Ontario ("Buffalo") and pens a fierce, Crazy Horse-ish squall about crack, murder and racism in her own back yard ("O Canada").
The hottest border-crossing tune, though, is "Oil Man's War," a cascading-piano story-song about two kids, Bobby and Annabel, that conflates Vietnam-era draft-dodging with modern geopolitics. Obviously, it isn't likely to woo Nashville radio. Neither is "The Cheapest Key," a harmonica-charged heartland rocker whose alphabetized first verse declares, "B is for bullshit." Too bad for Edwards, who surely knows that the image of Annabel's hand on Bobby's thigh while they break north deserves to outlive all the pap on the current country countdown.

Grand Funk Railroad Live Bosnia!! 2 Disc set Hard to Find!
|
| |

The Rolling Stone Album Guide offers the following description of the legendary rock band Grand Funk Railroad: "At its sweat-dripping best, the band emits a surging, elemental blast of hard-rock heat". I really was fortunate when I saw this band almost 25 years ago. Next to Emerson Lake and Palmer they are my favorite concert act. In the 70's Grand Funk Railroad was shunned by the critics because of their simple bluesy rock sound, but they won acclaim where it matters most....with the people. Well here it is 1997 and the red hot locomotive music machine is back on track with their new album BOSNIA. A double live CD on Capitol records, BOSNIA is a collection of classic Funk tunes including guest artists Peter Frampton, Alto Reed (sax player from the Silver Bullet Band), and Paul Shaffer conducting a 40 piece orchestra. Mark Farner, Mel Schacher, and Don Brewer are a powerhouse together and have never sounded so good. Play this one loud....IT KILLS! Comparing this to the band's 2 other live ventures "Live Album" and "Caught in the Act", BOSNIA really shines with quality and is no doubt the best of the lot. In fact, this may well be their greatest album ever! Mark Farner's voice and searing guitar cuts a delightfully entertaining path from start to finish, Mel Schacher's bass pounds out some nasty licks, and Don Brewer's drumming is the engine that keeps things moving. Some of the songs, like AIMLESS LADY and TIME MACHINE have never been recorded live before and are a real treat. The orchestrated I'M YOUR CAPTAIN/CLOSER TO HOME and LONELINESS are well coordinated with a good sound mix. What can I say?! This music kicks butt BIG TIME!! Not since FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE have I enjoyed a recorded concert of this type so much. For Funkheads (like me!) this is a must have CD. For non-Funk listeners, this is the one to have in your collection for an introduction. Highlights include, ARE YOU READY, FOOTSTOMPIN' MUSIC, INSIDE LOOKING OUT, WE'RE AN AMERICAN BAND, BAD TIME and others.--- Tom McConica
