| Quote: | | Apparently the notion of Lou Reed reinterpreting the works of Edgar Allan Poe didn't strike a positive chord with many folks, given the chilly commercial and critical reception accorded to Reed's 2003 album The Raven, and it seems plenty of fans were no more enthusiastic about seeing the material performed in person, since the tour staged to support the album found Reed playing smaller venues than was his custom. And in both cases, the folks who took a rain check really missed something; while The Raven was genuinely flawed, it was also one of Reed's most ambitious and compelling albums in quite some time, and the subsequent live shows found Reed and his musicians in truly superb form. Animal Serenade, recorded during the Los Angeles date of the tour, is a striking two-plus hour document of Reed and a fine ensemble in full flight; Reed brought along a small but potent backing band -- bassist and sometimes percussionist Fernando Saunders, guitarist Mike Rathke, cellist Jane Scarpantoni, and backing vocalist Antony -- and the performances presented manage to merge the intimacy of a small-group show with the force and passion of a full-on rock gig. The takes on "All Tomorrow's Parties" and "Dirty Blvd." are both hypnotic and muscular, but the more subtle and measured interpretations of "Venus in Furs," "Sunday Morning," and "The Day John Kennedy Died" easily conjure up the same edgy conviction, and Reed's interplay with his group is marvelous. These folks don't simply back him up; there's a genuine sense of collaboration among the musicians that's one of the real defining points between good and great performances. Animal Serenade isn't the hardest rockin' live album Lou Reed has ever cut, but for the sheer commitment and power of these performances, it's in a dead heat with Live in Italy as Reed's finest concert recording, and makes clear that in his fifth decade in music, Lou can still deliver the goods -- and in some respects is actually getting better. A more than pleasant surprise, and truly fine listening. |

Grammy-winning producer, virtuoso musician, hit songwriter, legendary A&R executive and, of course, lovable American Idol judge - Randy Jackson has called upon every aspect of his staggering career to produce Randy Jackson's Music Club, Vol. 1, his first solo album, was released March 11, 2008, on his new label, Dream Merchant 21, and released through the Concord Music Group.
The album includes a stellar ensemble of artists and features the return of fellow Idol judge Paula Abdul who's track "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow" is her first release of new music in over a decade. Other guests on the album include Idol standouts Katherine McPhee and Elliot Yamin, U.K. phenom Joss Stone, country trailblazer Travis Tritt, pop-rock hitmaker Jason Mraz, ace country songwriter-producer John Rich (of Big & Rich), R&B luminary Sam Moore and Bon Jovi guitarist-harmonizer Richie Sambora. Randy also works once more with the incredible Mariah Carey who guests on the gospel track "Understand" along with Bebe Winans and Hezekiah Walker, Kim Burrell & Rance Allen. The collection also features major up and coming talent such as the wonderful Barbie Esco on the track "My R&B" and Kelli Selah on "Who's Gonna Love You Now" among many others.
As for what's in the pipeline at Dream Merchant, Jackson says he's working on records for newcomers Esco and Selah. He says the goal of the label is to stay small and cultivate talented singers and songwriters, not necessarily break the next big pop star. "Great writing and great singing - that's great artistry. That's what the label stands for and that's why I called it Dream Merchant - where your dreams come true."

Utah Saints are a dance band from Leeds, England. The music is produced by Jez Willis and Tim Garbutt, who are joined on-stage by other musicians whenever the band plays live. The band had a string of hit singles in the British pop charts in the 1990s, and were notable for their extensive use of sampling technology. In particular, their practice of manipulating samples from mainstream pop and rock songs, and combining them with contrasting dance beats, predated the mashup scene by several years.
They were described as "the first true stadium house band" (by Bill Drummond), though their music is difficult to place into one particular genre and they have been compared to Underworld, Fluke, The KLF, and even Ministry or Nine Inch Nails.
They first had chart success with the singles "What Can You Do For Me", "Something Good" and "Believe In Me", which they described as their vocal sample trilogy as those singles sampled Gwen Guthrie, Kate Bush and Human League respectively ("What Can You Do For Me" also features a sample from Eurythmics). Contrary to one rumour, the band were not sued by Kate Bush over the use of a sample from Bush's track "Cloudbusting" in the Utah Saints track "Something Good" - the sample was legally cleared before use. Additionally, Bush sold Utah Saints footage from the video of her original song . This track is currently experiencing a revival in the clubs in 2008 with the soon-to-be released Van She remix.
Utah Saints then moved away from vocal samples with singles such as "I Want You" and "I Still Think Of You" (Jez Willis providing original vocals on each).
After their debut album, the self-titled Utah Saints, and one further single "Ohio", Utah Saints seemed to disappear for several years, though they were still busy doing remixes (for a diverse range of artists including Blondie, Human League, Hawkwind, Simple Minds, James, Annie Lennox and The Osmonds and the theme to the 1995 blockbuster, Mortal Kombat), and producing tracks for other artists such as Terrorvision. During this time, they recorded an album that was to be called "Wired World" but was never released, and produced a handful of Utah Saints tracks that to date have never had a proper release either, with titles such as "Star", "Train" and "Rock".
They eventually re-appeared in late 1999 with charting singles "Love Song", "Funky Music" (featuring Edwin Starr on guest vocals), "Power To The Beats" and "Lost Vagueness" (featuring Chrissie Hynde), by releasing the album Two. Also in 2000, Utah Saints did the soundtrack for the video game Carmageddon TDR2000. In 2002 they went back into hibernation and fans are still waiting for their next re-appearance. They have been doing DJ appearances and the occasional remix but there has been no more original material so far.
The band are notorious amongst their fans and the dance music community for taking a long time in between their releases - their first album Utah Saints and follow-up album Two were released seven years apart.
They have also been working on projects under other names, such as BeatVandals, as well as developing their very popular regular Leeds-based club night SugarBeatClub.
