Defiance is a 2008 American World War II film directed by Edward Zwick, director of Blood Diamond and The Last Samurai, and had a limited United States release on December 31, 2008. Set in conquered Belarus during World War II, the film is an adaptation of Nechama Tec's Defiance: The Bielski Partisans based on the true story of the Bielski partisans. In the book, pacifistic and nonmilitant Polish Jews come together to train in the military arts and oppose the German and Russian occupation of their homeland.
Defiance stars Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell, and George MacKay as four Jewish brothers from Poland who escape from the Nazis and fight back to rescue fellow Jews. Production began in early September 2007. The film is scheduled for full release on January 16, 2009.During World War II, four Jewish brothers (Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell, George MacKay) escape their Nazi-occupied homeland of West Belarus in Poland and join the Soviet partisans to combat the Nazis.The brothers begin the rescue of roughly 1,200 Jews still trapped in the ghettos of Poland. The film tracks their struggle to evade invading German forces while still maintaining their mission to save Jewish lives.

YONKERS JOE is a great addition to the tradition of independent New York centered films. Twelve years in the making, its story of a mid-level professional gambler and his adult son with Down's Syndrome was compelling and skillfully played. Chaz Palminteri keeps your attention throughout the story, and Tom Guiry (The Black Donnellys)deserves recognition for a convincing performance of a young man coping with Down's.
The story covers familiar ground with lots of nice twists and details. Technically very clever on the skills required to take on a modern casino security system. Believable from beginning to end.

Support this film when it comes out for release. Wonderful performances by Palminteri, Christine Lahti as his patient and clever love interest and a solid character cast including Michael Lerner,Roma Maffia, Arthur Nascarella and many familiar TV series faces. Any father/son should see this movie. You will laugh and learn, and be wiser at the end.

Way back, when the state of the art in computer graphics was 280x192 in 8 colors, and no such thing as CGI effects existed, Jim Henson made a beautiful classic little fantasy film called, "The Dark Crystal." Long before the movie was released to theatres in the US and UK, it was provided to test audiences for reactions. The surveys taken at the showings, guide the filmmakers and producers in how to tweak and make final edits to the film. I GOT TO SEE IT THIS WAY!
As a kid, I was overjoyed with this, it was better than ANYTHING else provided for kids at the time (I still LOVE this film!). Jim Henson was a GOD!
Unfortunately, the test audience comprised a large number of mundanes and the dramatic challenged, people better suited to be couch-potatos, not theatre-goers. It was rumored that kids ran from the theatre... I don't remember that, I think idiot parents were horrified, maybe because there were no humans in it?!?
When the movie was finally released to theatres, I got a shock, when what I had been waiting to see again was chopped up, and dumbed down. It was great to finally see most of the special effects, but the film became hobbled, and the benefit of paying attention to get all the details was destroyed by having everything explained plainly or tossed in your face. These variations may not seem that big, but they were very noticeable to me... and I had waited so long to see this film again.
Then I attended The Answer, "The Rat Stuff!," a.k.a. the 42nd WorldCon in Los Angeles. There I found a large number of fans of the film, most who were twice my age at the time, and one of them knew a person who knew another person.... And so after waiting several more weeks, I received this precious little videotape in the mail. It was a copy of a workprint of the film, used to review different background music soundtracks to the film (anybody remember "Legend" where it was released in the UK with a Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack, and in the US with Tangerine Dream?). The first two were Trevor Jones (the actual choice, a strikingly beautiful OST, like all his work) and Vangelis. Unfotunately the VHS tape was not long enough for more than 15 minutes of the Vangelis material.
So, after my last move, I dove into my 3000 tape VHS collection and fished out that old tape, and encoded it. Hopefully you will enjoy it, if not as a curiosity, an example of what minor things can be done to a film by others, a better version, or at least a view of what is, effectively, the directors cut of the movie.
Some things to be aware of before you watch this:
1. It is a WORK-PRINT, it was never intended to be anything but a quick hack together by the editors to test things like timing, edit points, level corrections, etc.
2. This is in black & white. My assumption is that they used monochrome stock because it was cheaper to deal with and it was not at the stage for color work.
3. As a work-print, edits, cuts, and notes are actually marked on the film with both grease-pencil and marker. You will see a lot of this. As an edit test, light levels also were not a concern, and therefore black and white levels vary considerably from one scene to another. This made it impossible for me to do any correction work. A filter might clean up one scene but completely destroy the next.
4. The film stock was actually handled by a very large number of people, and ended up picking up lots of dirt. Again having a dirty print did not matter for this work print, image clarity was not important.
5. The work print was transferred first to professional videotape, each of the small spools of film were transferred, so between each of the nearly dozen small spools of film, there was a hard analog videotape break, with all the expected audio and video noise. I edited most of these out, and that was nearly 3 minutes of hashing and breakups.
6. That tape was then transferred to VHS from which my copy of the tape was made. Unfortunately, this was a long time ago and image stabilization was not yet a large part of the electronics of the consumer VHS market. Therefore, any time there was a little jump or a little noise in the original tape, the machine could not maintain the image and it often lost a lock on the image. Noise on the original tape made for chaos on the copies, and this is most apparent during the Skesis' banquet segment.
7. Many of the special effects, and things like the titles and credits, were not present at this stage of work, so odd things tend to show up in places. Characters appearing on black or grey backgrounds (greenscreen), only a small area of the screen is used because a matte would be added later, seeing a bit of the English countryside in a shot, or seeing an oddly shaped object ascending on a rope in place of the special effect of the Ur-skeks ascension... A few of the voices are even a little different (or missing).
Of the things you will notice in variance from the released film are the cutting of several scenes (notably a close-up of naked Jen, and the Skesis funeral), re-arrangement of some of the scenes (mostly from the start of the film), trimming of some scenes (Podling villager festival), the addition of voice-overs (lord was that distracting), added narration, and a complete re-dub of all the non-English languages.
In the test version, English represented the Gelfling tongue -- you should hear only English when Gelfling is spoken... Every other race had it's own language, but the final film changed that, and you really have to look hard to see that all the races did not speak the same language. I must have been an odd child, because I didn't have any problem understanding the gist of what was being said, when the characters didn't speak English. I find that touch added quite a lot to the proper feel of the film.
This encode is the best balance of file-size versus quality I could get from the source. If anybody wants to try enhancing this, feel free, but it's probably not worth it.
Since there was probably only one copy of the test audience print (35mm clean color version of this), and no sign of this version of the film on any of the seven releases (soon to be eight) of the film to the consumer market, I am guessing that this may be the only surviving version of the film in this form.  I hope it isn't, because I would love to see this in HQ color.

Just how many times were you listening to a radio online and heard things you desperately wanted to record? Or you just needed to do some recording for God knows what purposes? If you didn't know, several thousands of programs are waiting for you to use them in exactly this kind of situations; and, should they be able to think, I guess they'd ask themselves what's taking you so long...
It's really a pleasure to see a nice software, running on little memory, being very small, and - at the same - looking very good, doing a fien job and helping you write down in digital format the things that you like. Even though there are so many recording softwares, few get to include a bit of all these good things to create a decent product, that's worth buying. Ad Stream Recorder seems to be one of those little programs which has been carefully developed and thus, is really worth - at least - a short description.
The Looks
The nicest thing I have noticed as I first saw the Ad Stream Recorder was the nice XP-themed GUI and the orderly manner in which things have been arranged in it. The general appearance of Ad Stream Recorder is shiny and almost eye-candy: shady light, purple colors, also shady metallic matching buttons with super-readable graphics make this program quite a sight for sore eyes.
Maybe the classic symbols on the control buttons are a bit too dark for my taste: in my opinion, things could look a lot better if those elements were brighter. There are 3 sectors in the main
window: the first one - split in 2 - will display the sine-views of the source and the recorded signal; the second one is an area dedicated to control and settings buttons, as well as seekbar and volume bar, while the third one is showing the list of recorded tracks, with detailed info on format, rate, mode, size and date.
One thing I have never seen in recording softwares is that the recording sine-view has a constantly moving cursor; exactly the kind of cursor behind which the waveform is being written in major recording programs. Well, this cursor is moving all the time, sweeping the screen from left to right and as you actually start recording it will begin to leave "traces" behind. Very weird this constant monitoring-movement...nevertheless, it's not a bad thing.
The menus are very easy to understand and read so here (regarding the GUI) the Ad Stream Recorder gets a good mark: neat and sleek design, eye-comforting and functional.
The Works
Technically, the Ad Stream Recorder does just one single job: recording from any audio source on your PC in two very popular formats: WAV and its compressed version, MP3. The fact that the in and out settings are the Windows native settings will significantly ease the general operation, as almost anyone who is a bit familiarized with the Win OS' sound settings will be able to tweak the Ad Stream Recorder in just seconds.
The info on the recording details is very well displayed and contains all the needed elements: format, bitrate, samplerate stereo mode and time counter. Another very handy visual feature is that both the source and the recorded waveforms increase amplitude as you increase volume from the (obviously, volume) bar. Thus, you can have some visual control of what is happening with the recording session and do the necessary adjustments when needed.
Each time you do a recording, the Ad Stream Recorder will add the specific track in the list, so you can administer the results of your work more efficiently. As for setting up the output files, the tweaking is really easy and it demands absolutely no effort: you have 2 tabs, one for either of the two formats, with simple settings for bitrate, samplerate and stereo mode. No problem whatsoever.
The Good
It's really good that a software like Ad Stream Recorder can blend both looks and functionality on one hand, and on the other, features and easy use. A very reliable and awesomely simple tool for small recording needs.
