Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 British drama film directed by Danny Boyle, co-directed by Loveleen Tandan, and written by Simon Beaufoy. It is an adaptation of the Boeke Prize winning and Commonwealth Writers' Prize nominated novel Q and A by Indian author and diplomat Vikas Swarup. Tandan, who began as the film's casting director, was later appointed the co-director by Boyle because of her significant contributions to the film's production.[2]
Set and filmed in India, Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of a young man from the Dharavi slums of Mumbai who appears on Kaun Banega Crorepati (the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?) and exceeds people's expectations, arousing the suspicions of the game show host and of law enforcement officials.
After screenings at the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, Slumdog Millionaire initially had a limited North American release on 12 November 2008 to critical acclaim and awards success, and later had a nationwide release in the United States on 26 December 2008 and in the United Kingdom on 9 January 2009. It premiered in Mumbai on 22 January 2009.[3]
Slumdog Millionaire won five of the six awards it was nominated for at the Critics' Choice Awards and all four of the awards it was nominated for at the Golden Globes. It has also been nominated for eleven BAFTA Awards and ten Academy Awards.
A Mumbai teen who grew up in the slums, becomes a contestant on the Indian version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" He is arrested under suspicion of cheating, and while being interrogated, events from his life history are shown which explain why he knows the answers. |

Defiance is a 2008 American World War II film directed by Edward Zwick, director of Blood Diamond and The Last Samurai, and had a limited United States release on December 31, 2008. Set in conquered Belarus during World War II, the film is an adaptation of Nechama Tec's Defiance: The Bielski Partisans based on the true story of the Bielski partisans. In the book, pacifistic and nonmilitant Polish Jews come together to train in the military arts and oppose the German and Russian occupation of their homeland.
Defiance stars Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell, and George MacKay as four Jewish brothers from Poland who escape from the Nazis and fight back to rescue fellow Jews. Production began in early September 2007. The film is scheduled for full release on January 16, 2009.During World War II, four Jewish brothers (Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell, George MacKay) escape their Nazi-occupied homeland of West Belarus in Poland and join the Soviet partisans to combat the Nazis.The brothers begin the rescue of roughly 1,200 Jews still trapped in the ghettos of Poland. The film tracks their struggle to evade invading German forces while still maintaining their mission to save Jewish lives.

In the original movie, a flying saucer orbits Earth, and lands in Washington, DC, on the Mall. Klaatu (Michael Rennie) steps out and is shot by a jumpy soldier. Gort (Lock Martin), an indestructible robot steps out of the spacecraft and proceeds to melt all the weapons, including tanks. Later, the Earth comes to realize that Gort has used very little of his power to make this happen.
While lying on the ground, Klaatu orders Gort to stop, and is then taken by the military to a hospital from which he later escapes in order to learn more about this planet called Earth and its human inhabitants. He meets Helen Benson (Patricia Neal) and her son Billy (Billy Gray); takes Klaatu on a tour of Washington, DC; and finally stops in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Klaatu reads the words uttered by Lincoln many years ago and realizes that there might be hope for Earth.
When they begin to suspect the alien man, he reveals himself, along with the news that Gort is a member of a race of super-robot enforcers invented to keep the peace of the galaxy and will destroy the Earth if provoked. Klaatu is pursued and shot and killed by the military. Before Klaatu dies, he tells Helen to go to Gort, and say the words "Klaatu barada nikto." If she does not, Klaatu tells her Gort will destroy the Earth. Helen makes her way to the ship and finds Gort. As the robot moves towards her, she repeats the phrase over and over. The robot picks her up and takes her into the ship. It then retrieves Klaatu's body and, through their alien science, resurrects Klaatu.
The 2008 remake about an alien and his indestructible robot will star Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, Jennifer Connelly as Helen Benson, Jaden Smith as Jacob, and Kathy Bates. Gort has not been cast at this time and will most likely be created using SFX.
The remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still will supposedly remain true to the original movie. However, there is a chance the remake will more likely remain true to the short story upon which the 1951 movie is based. In either case, the alien weaponry seems to have been upgraded. In addition to a city going dark, and a very brief look at the new Gort, the film trailer shows a cloud of black smoke, capable of rapid movement and disintegrating matter on contact.
In the 1951 movie, Gort is described as one of a race of robots created by the planets to maintain peace throughout the galaxy. If the 2008 remake follows "Farewell to the Master," the short story by Harry Bates upon which the 1951 movie is based will be used for the ending,

After the demise of that outfit, he founded an independent record label One Drop Interouter which released four albums. Later, he worked with the People and founded the Main Squeeze labels.
Culture founded the New Sector Movements featuring a number of broken beat artists. His production features rhythms and hybrids of several musical styles such as jazz-fusion, funk and soul. He produced an album by British jazz artist Monday Michiru Jazz Brat in 1995
He appeared on the Roots Manuva album Brand New Second Hand in 1999. In 2001, New Sector Movements released Download This through Virgin Records. An EP No Tricks preceded the release of Download This.
In 2001, he released the Inspirations album followed by a 2 CD set of the same name in 2003. He also produced the Les Nubians album One Step Forward released in 2003. In 2004, a second album from the New Sector Movement Turn It Up credited to NSM.
Musically this album is a triptych comprising of three sessions, Zen I, II and III which individually, and in unison blend tonalities of jazz, hip-hop, house and broken beat.Assemblage and influence unite when you drop the needle and it’s off to Africa, via Japan, West London and Saturn. |
