This four-disc box represents the cream of Aretha Franklin's canon. Initially signed to Columbia by the legendary John Hammond, Franklin spent her time floundering about as the label struggled to find a stylistic fit for her. When her contract was up, she signed with Atlantic and was immediately teamed up with producer Jerry Wexler. He promptly enlisted the musical magicians down in Alabama's Muscle Shoals studio as her back-up band. It was as if her bottled-up creativity had been let loose on an unsuspecting world. Like Ray Charles before her, Lady Soul uses her vibrant vocals and powerful piano playing to create a crossroads where musical genres met. Starting with the Gospel she cut her teeth on as a child, Franklin throws ingredients of soul, country, jazz and pop into a delicious musical gumbo.
Aretha Franklin's amazing range allowed her to not only write much of her own material, but travel along and pick songs off a wide variety of musical trees. In addition to covering songs by Otis Redding and Don Covay, Franklin also dips into the catalogs of Nina Simone, Willie Nelson, The Beatles and Elton John. During her 12 years with Atlantic, the Queen Of Soul also took turns dabbling in material associated with Motown, Philly soul and Stax. QUEEN OF SOUL is essential listening.

Allison Moorer's Buddy Miller-produced Mockingbird (New Line) is set to drop on February 19th, 2008. The 12-track album is a celebration of songs composed by female songwriters including Nina Simone, June Carter Cash, Patti Smith, Joni Mitchell, Cat Power, Gillian Welch, Moorer’s sister Shelby Lynne and others; the title track of the collection is an original by Moorer. It's her sixth studio album and the followup to Moorer's her critically acclaimed 2006 release Getting Somewhere.
“Some people have asked me why I wanted to cover only female writers, and all I can say about it is that I think the feminine voice should be paid attention to, treasured and encouraged," said Moorer, in a statement. Check out the November issue of HARP for our "Inside Tracks" feature on Moorer and her new album, of which she observes, "I've always wanted to do a covers record, but that's just too broad for me to deal with. So, I thought, what if I do just women?"
Moorer, of course, was recently heard guesting on hubby Steve Earle's latestd album. And before she sets out on tour in support of the album in 2008, she can be seen starring in Rebel Voices, a new play based on Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove’s best -selling book Voices of a People’s History of the United States. The play, in its debut at Culture Project in New York City, combats hopelessness by igniting the forces responsible for arousing change and celebrating the indomitable human spirit. It will run from November 10th through December 16th.

Wire in the Blood - Series 3

Episode 1:* Redemption
Tony suspects a serial killer is luring dejected children to their deaths when the bodies of three young boys are found in different places in Bradfield. Each of the victims had suffered maltreatment. As it becomes more obvious that these victims are being placed at very specific sites, Tony comes to realize that the killer is trying to tell police something about their past.

Episode 2:* Bad Seed
When a series of vicious murders sends a town reeling, Dr. Tony Hill becomes consumed with the notion that they are the work of the known killer, William 'Mack the Knife' MacAdam. Now a newly released inmate, and after receiving an education during his long sentence, MacAdam is now enrolled as a Ph.D. student in Tony's University class, and now seems overly keen to take Hill’s place as the media pundit on serial killer cases.

Episode 3:* Nothing But The Night
The brutal murder of a woman, beaten to death with a steam iron, brings Tony back from a publicity tour for his latest book, to join in on Carol's investigation. Then more bizarre, but completely different deaths follow, and Tony is bewildered, unable to create a profile for the seemingly schizophrenic killer.

Episode 4:* Synchronicity
After being hit on the head by a would-be killer, Tony wakes up in the ER to discover he's got a brain tumor. Although his behavior doesn't initially strike Carol as particularly strange - he's always been eccentric - the doctors say it's down to a chance whether his bizarre symptoms signify something which might actually be fatal.

Episode 3:* Shadows Rising (1)
