Tropic Thunder 2008 DVDSCR XViD-HEFTY
Synopsis: A commercial depicts rapper Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson) promoting his two brands: the “Booty Sweat” energy drink and “Bust-A-Nut” candy bar, while performing his hit song, “I Love Tha’ Pussy”. The first trailer shows action star Tugg Speedman’s (Ben Stiller) latest film, ‘Scorcher VI: Global Meltdown’, a film so repetitive of it’s five predecessors that even the trailer narrator sounds shaky about it. Another trailer features funnyman Jeff “Fatty” Portnoy (Jack Black), playing the entirety of “America’s favorite obese family” in the highly flautlent ‘The Fatties: Fart 2'. The final trailer, entitled ‘Satan’s Alley’, features Australian “five-time Oscar winner” Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) and Tobey Maguire (as himself) as two monks who begin an empassioned affair. We are taken, via the narration of John “Four Leaf” Tayback (Nick Nolte), into a gruesome battle of the Vietnam War. This is actually a scene from ‘Tropic Thunder’, a big budget adaptation of Tayback’s wartime memoir. Starring as the central platoon are Speedman, Lazarus, Chino and Portnoy, as well as young character actor Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel). To play his character, Sgt. Osiris, an African American, Lazarus has dyed his skin dark and refuses to break character from Osiris. A take of Osiris crying over Tayback’s (played by Speedman) blown-off hands is ruined when Speedman is unable to cry and Lazarus dribbles uncontrollably into Speedman’s face. This causes great frustration for the film’s director, Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan). The chaos is further exacerbated when the film’s pyrotechnics expert, Cody (Danny R. McBride), mistakes Cockburn’s conniptions for a go to set off several expensive explosions.

Starting his career with hip-hop duo Dodge City Productions almost a decade ago, IG has more recently tuned into the merits of a sound becoming increasingly known as phusion. This debut is a beautifully balanced mix of jazz-funk grooves, soulful vocals, busted up beats (no straight four to the floor here, though the mood is often as uplifting as good quality soul house) and warm analogue sounds. In terms of dance music, it's one of the most musically exciting and highly original records to emerge for a very long time. It might take a while to get used to its eclectic vibe, but when you do the rewards are startlingly high. |

| Quote: | Karsh Kale (pronounced Kursh Kah-Lay) has spent much of the past five years watching music critics try to describe his music as some kind of hybrid of Eastern and Western, or traditional and electronic. And it's true that his early goal of bringing Indian classical music into the Western pop mainstream led him to create some genre-busting global electronic music. Like his contemporary, Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A., Kale has found a way to incorporate his roots into a thoroughly modern context. His first solo album, in 2001, Realize, established the young tabla-playing producer as a major force in the Asian Massive
movement – a club-based phenomenon on several continents. Even then, Kale was telling reviewers that his goal was "to take this music to the next level." Part of that meant live performance, and Kale's follow up album, Liberation, was a highly polished, tightly-produced collection that Kale and his band could perform live. Another part of the "next level" was getting to a point where the South Asian elements were simply an accepted part of the mainstream pop vernacular.Indian percussionist and composer Karsh Kale's second effort for the Six Degrees label offers further evidence that the man is simply incapable of producing a boring album. On Realize, his full-length debut (not counting his many remix credits and studio appearances with such artists as Sting, Bill Laswell, and Herbie Hancock), Kale promiscuously blended electronica, classical Indian music, and rock & roll, and he does so again on Liberation. But he avoids repeating himself byincorporating orchestral strings on several tracks (courtesy of the Madras Chamber Orchestra) and by refining his approach somewhat, doing more with fewer musical elements. The neat and tidy jungle beats, distorto bass, and melismatic female vocals on "Instinct" may not be exceptionally innovative, but they sure work well, and the incongruously titled "DirtyFellow" is both melodically sweet and headbangingly funky. The album's two highlight tracks are "Milan," which cleverly blends tabla, flute, funky drumming, and strings to create something that sounds very much like what Bill Laswell is often trying for and frequently missing on his own worldbeat experiments, and "Epic," which closes the album with a lush and
gorgeous soundscape over which funk beats are layered episodically. Highly recommended. |

Before there was alt-country there were the Blood Oranges. Their three releases fell squarely in a genre that didn't even have a name yet; indeed,had it formed, they'd have been one of the leading names. Not only did they have a superb guitar player in Mark Spencer, but they had a wonderfully emotional writer and singer in Cheri Knight [I'll add here: she's alt-country's answer to Linda Thompson] and Jimmy Ryan's mandolin, composing, and singing provided much of the country flavor. It's just a shame they were ahead of their time.
